ISBN-13 book barcodes for small presses and self-publishers

A modern ISBN is already an EAN-13. If you own 978-0-123456-78-9, the barcode is those 13 digits with the hyphens gone. This guide is for the small press or self-publisher who needs a scannable bookland code on a sticker or a cover proof, without uploading the title list to a hosted generator.

ISBN-13 is EAN-13. That is the whole trick.

The 13-digit ISBN that replaced ISBN-10 is encoded as EAN-13. Prefixes 978 and 979 are the bookland range. The check digit is the same GS1 modulo-10 used for every other EAN-13. In LabelStack, set symbology to ean13, paste 9780123456789 (hyphens stripped), and you get the same bars a bookstore gun expects.

Hyphens are for humans. They are not part of the number. 978-0-123456-78-9 and 9780123456789 are the same ISBN; only the second one belongs in a barcode field. If a row fails, look for a leftover hyphen or an ISBN-10 still sitting in the column.

ISBN-10 is not an EAN, and X is not a digit here

Old ISBN-10 used a modulo-11 check that can be the letter X. That is not a GTIN. You cannot drop ISBN-10 into an EAN-13 field. Convert first: prefix 978, drop the ISBN-10 check, recompute the EAN-13 check. If you still have a list of 10-digit ISBNs, convert them in the spreadsheet you already trust, then bring the 13-digit results here. LabelStack will validate the EAN-13 check; it will not silently convert ISBN-10, because a bad conversion is worse than a red row.

Do not invent an ISBN. Bowker (US) and the local ISBN agency in other countries issue them. The same warning as homemade UPCs applies: a well-formed 978… number you typed until it checked is not a title identifier you own.

What this tool does not print: the five-digit price add-on

Retail book covers in some markets add a second, smaller barcode to the right of the ISBN with a price or a 5-digit add-on. LabelStack prints the main GTIN, not that add-on. If a printer or a distributor requires the two-part Bookland mark as a single asset, that is a cover-design job in a layout tool using our SVG for the main code, not a 5160 sheet job.

For warehouse and fulfillment stickers on cartons of books, the main ISBN as EAN-13 (or the carton as ITF-14) is what receiving scans. Do not put a price add-on on a 1″ label. There is no room, and the gun is not looking for it there.

A small-press sticker workflow

One row per title, or one row per unit if you are labelling copies. Columns: value (the 13-digit ISBN), symbology ean13, name (title, truncated), sku (your internal title code), custom (binding or edition). Avery 5160 fits a short title plus the EAN. Avery 5163 fits a title you can read from a shelf cart. Export PDF at 100% on Letter, or switch to L7160 if you are on A4 stock.

Proof one sheet, scan with the same kind of gun the bookstore or the warehouse uses if you can, and keep the CSV next to the print run. Title data never leaves the browser. That matters more than it sounds when the spreadsheet also has unannounced titles and preorder counts.
